Discovery of Seal Pup in the Forest of Sweden

Hunter Robert Sandefors was out for a walk in the forest when he came upon a surprising seal pup in eastern SwedenThe pup was nearly four miles from the sea, but had somehow crawled over sea ice for about 1.8 miles and then kept going the same distance over snowy terrain.

“He must have gotten separated from his mother and gotten lost and gone in the wrong direction,” Sandefors said. The seal’s tracks in the snow supported the idea the seal had made its own way into the forest.

Uppsala police inspector Henrik Pederson said that when Sandefors called to report the seal finding he sounded “somewhat confused.” The police inspector found it hard to believe, himself. “I thought he was joking at first,” he said.

Fortunately the strange story had a happy ending and the seal was taken to the nearby Dalaelven river, where it was released and swam away.
